In late 2022, like other wineries in the Colchagua Valley, Viña Caliterra was impacted by the wave of forest fires that swept through this part of the country, consuming 309 hectares of native forest and sclerophyllous scrubland, as well as some hectares of vineyards, biological corridors and grasslands. The fire was classified as moderately severe, based on its effects on the ecosystem.

Wanting to take a proactive stance in the face of these events and devise an ecological restoration strategy that would create opportunities for the post-fire recovery and regeneration of the plant life affected,since mid-2023 the winery has been working with a team of experts from the Wine, Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme, a scientific initiative of the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (IEB) and the Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh).

The initiative is currently under development based on pilot tests and will undoubtedly help in identifying opportunities to recover and regenerate native forests and the implications for biodiversity conservation, with a view to replicating it in the future.
