A return home: Caliterra celebrates the release of a rescued black-chested buzzard-eagle

This past March, during harvest season, an unexpected visitor arrived near Viña Caliterra: a juvenile black-chested buzzard-eagle, visibly weakened, sought refuge at a nearby home. What began as a moment of surprise quickly turned into a story of commitment, care, and recovery — culminating in a joyful ending: the eagle returned to its natural environment, Caliterra — its home.

Thanks to the quick response of our team, the eagle received immediate attention. We contacted Matías Valdés, a specialist in birds of prey and native wildlife, who leads the Vida Rapaz project, dedicated to conservation and environmental education in the Colchagua and Maule valleys. Matías stabilised the bird at his home — providing hydration and first aid — and identified signs of dehydration and possible poisoning.

The eagle was then handed over to the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), which transferred it to Parque Safari Rancagua, where it underwent rehabilitation for over four months.

The black-chested buzzard-eagle (Geranoaetus melanoleucus) is a native Chilean raptor that plays a key role in maintaining ecosystem balance by controlling populations of small mammals, reptiles, and birds. Its return to the wild represents not only a victory for local biodiversity, but also a powerful symbol of Caliterra’s connection with its natural surroundings and ongoing commitment to sustainability.

This release marks an inspiring milestone in our environmental commitment, reminding us that caring for nature goes far beyond the vineyard.
At Caliterra, protecting the biodiversity that surrounds us is a fundamental part of our daily work.
